Tally vs ERP: when does a growing business need more than accounting software?

Tally is excellent accounting software. An ERP runs operations. Here is the difference, the signs you have outgrown Tally alone, and how to run both together.

Key takeaways

  • Tally records what happened in money terms; an ERP runs the operations that create those transactions.
  • You have outgrown Tally alone when stock, production, orders and channels are managed outside it in Excel.
  • You do not have to choose: many businesses run the ERP for operations and push vouchers into Tally.

Almost every Indian business we meet uses Tally, and for good reason: it is reliable, accountants know it, and it handles GST well. The question is not whether Tally is good. It is whether accounting software alone can run the rest of your business.

The core difference

Tally (accounting software)

  • Records transactions after they happen
  • Built for accountants
  • Vouchers, ledgers, GST, statutory reports
  • Stock mostly as quantities and values

ERP (operations software)

  • Runs the processes that create transactions
  • Built for every department
  • Purchase, production, orders, dispatch, portals, dashboards
  • Stock by batch, expiry, lot, location and channel

Put simply: Tally tells you what happened in rupees. An ERP decides and records what happens on the floor, then produces the accounting as a by-product.

Signs you have outgrown Tally alone

  • Production, recipes or job work are tracked in Excel next to Tally
  • Stock in Tally does not match the godown because entries are delayed
  • Orders from Shopify, marketplaces or distributors are re-typed into Tally
  • You need batch, expiry, lot or design-wise stock that people can see live
  • Sales, production and stores need different access, not one shared login
  • The owner wants a live dashboard, not a report prepared on request

If three or more of these are true, the cost of the manual work around Tally is probably higher than the cost of an ERP.

Three ways to run Tally and an ERP

SetupHow it worksBest for
ERP for operations, Tally for booksERP pushes sales, purchase and receipt vouchers into TallyBusinesses whose CA works in Tally
ERP for everythingLedgers, GST and reports come from the ERPBusinesses that want one system
Tally plus add-onsThird-party add-ons extend TallySmall, simple operations

ERP + Tally, working together

  1. 01

    Operations in ERP

    Purchase, production, orders, dispatch

  2. 02

    Invoice in ERP

    GST-correct, from live stock

  3. 03

    Voucher export

    Scheduled push or file import

  4. 04

    Books in Tally

Your CA files and audits as usual

What changes for your team

  • Stores and production enter receipts and batches as they happen, on their own screens.
  • Sales create orders once; the invoice, e-way bill and stock update follow.
  • Accounts stop re-typing and start reviewing.
  • The owner sees stock, sales, dues and profit on a dashboard and a daily WhatsApp summary.

If you are weighing this up, our manufacturing ERP and FMCG ERP pages show what the operations side looks like, and custom ERP cost explains pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tally an ERP?

Tally is primarily accounting and inventory software. It covers finance and basic stock well, but it is not built to run production, multi-channel orders, portals or department workflows the way an ERP is.

Can an ERP integrate with Tally?

Yes. An ERP can export or push sales, purchase and receipt vouchers to Tally so books stay in Tally while operations run in the ERP.

Should a small business move from Tally to ERP?

Only when manual work around Tally becomes costly: stock, production or orders tracked in Excel, delays in stock updates, or several sales channels.
